On January 20th, 2017, the United States will say goodbye to Barack Obama, the first African American President of the UnitedStates of America.
Obama has been the president for most of Whetstone students’ lives. Obama went into office on January 20th, 2009 and the memes have loved him for almost eight years. Obama’s vice president Joe Biden has also become a regular in the meme world.
For those of you who don’t know, a meme is a humorous image, video, or piece of text that is copied and spread rapidly via the internet.
With the idea of Obama and Biden leaving office, the memes have exploded in popularity and creativity, ranging from memes about Biden’s alleged hatred for Trump to memes highlighting his love for Obama.
“I’ll miss Obama and the memes,” said Whetstone junior Maia Johnson. She has been a lover of Obama and Biden memes for half of her life.
“It was just really good to see [Obama] as a president really trying to get the younger generations involved and interested in politics because it’s really important. I think that’s what I’ll miss the most, that he cared so much about our generation,” said Whetstone junior Isabel Cook. She then added, “the memes are really funny and they always make me laugh.”
I know I’ll miss the Obama-Biden duo that’s been so inspiring for as long as I can remember. The one thing that keeps me strong in this sad time is knowing that the memes will never die, and the memories of the bromance will forever be in our hearts.
