The basketball season for the Lady Braves is coming to an end, but the ladies aren’t finished putting in the work yet. The girls’ squad is hard at work preparing for their upcoming state tournament game and next season.
“We are going to have practices every day for the next three weeks in order to prepare for the OHSAA Division 1 tournament. As a team we are going to be doing a lot of skills and drills and Insanity training which is cardio work outs,” stated sophomore forward, Ava Kowalski. Grove City High School and St. Francis DeSales High School will be playing on February 13th at 1pm. The winner of that game will host the Braves, who had a bye the first round of the tournament, on February 19th. In order to prepare, the Lady Braves and two coaches Paren Fisher and Jared Link plan on scouting the DeSales vs. Grove City game.
After the end of the regular season, the girls aren’t done yet. While the Braves are preparing for the tournament, they’re also planning to put in work for the off season. The girl’s main goal is to pick up right where they left off once the 2016-2017 season begins. They know that this is going to start by constantly working to improve over the summer. “We do several different scrimmages over the summer and also play in a league together. We also have conditionings and open gyms for girls that are interested in playing basketball for Whetstone,” junior guard, Ava McCargish stated.
The Lady Braves are hoping that their excitement and energy carries over to the new season ahead. Assistant Coach Jared Link has a positive outlook towards next year. “Next season will definitely be good because we have a lot of heart and will to win…” He also states, “There’s definitely a positive outlook on next year if we come with the right attitude.” The team ended up finishing the regular season with a 12-10 overall winning record. The Braves were 9-5 in the City League North Division, ranking at 3rd place.
